URGENT STATEMENT

Concerns Over Suspicious Death, Sudden Health Crisis, and Temporary Detention of Southern Yemeni Leaders in Riyadh

Wefaq Organization, based in Switzerland, expresses its profound concern regarding a series of concurrent events that took place in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, during January 2026. These incidents targeted Southern Yemeni leaders within a sensitive political context, raising serious alarms regarding personal safety, psychological pressure, and the respect for fundamental human rights.

On January 27, 2026, Brigadier General Abdullah Saleh Al-Jayyad, Commander of the 31st Brigade of the Southern Giants Forces, passed away while in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. While it was officially announced that the death resulted from a traffic accident, the lack of detailed and transparent information regarding the circumstances of the incident—coupled with its timing alongside the presence of several Southern leaders in Riyadh—has sparked widespread questions and concerns within Southern circles and human rights communities.

Less than 24 hours later, on January 28, 2026, Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Al-Jabwani, a member of the Southern Transitional Council’s (STC) Presidium and a member of the Southern delegation participating in the dialogue, suffered a severe heart attack at his residence in Riyadh and was subsequently moved to intensive care. The timing of this incident, occurring under strenuous political conditions and potential pressures, raises serious concerns about exposure to acute psychological stress or grave political coercion.

Furthermore, Wefaq Organization has received corroborated reports indicating that the Southern delegation participating in the talks was subjected to actual detention and temporary disappearance for three days upon their arrival in Riyadh in early January 2026. During this period, all communication with the members was severed, their whereabouts remained unknown, and no official explanations were provided regarding their location or legal status.

The Organization considers this forced disruption of communication a serious violation of the right to liberty and personal security. Such acts may amount to temporary enforced disappearance under the definitions adopted by international human rights law, particularly given the high-pressure and sensitive political environment.

These collective incidents occur while a large Southern delegation has been present in Riyadh since early January 2026 for political dialogue, amid circulating reports of:

  • Political and psychological pressure exerted on delegation members.
  • Restrictions on movement and communication.
  • Repeated delays in the dialogue process without clear justification.
  • Attempts to impose arrangements affecting the structure of Southern forces.
  • Tensions related to the disbursement of funds and requests for certain participants to depart.

While Wefaq Organization emphasizes that it does not adopt pre-emptive conclusions, it maintains that the accumulation and synchronization of these events demand full seriousness. They serve as potential indicators of violations affecting the right to physical integrity, personal freedom, and protection from cruel or inhuman treatment.

Accordingly, Wefaq Organization calls for:

  1. Full and transparent disclosure of the circumstances surrounding the death of Brigadier General Abdullah Saleh Al-Jayyad.
  2. An official clarification regarding the detention and temporary disappearance of the Southern delegation upon their arrival in Riyadh.
  3. Guarantees for the physical and psychological safety of all leaders and delegation members currently in the Kingdom.
  4. Respect for the right to freedom of movement, including allowing those who wish to leave the Kingdom to do so without restrictions.
  5. Enabling independent human rights entities to monitor and document these incidents.

Wefaq Organization affirms that it will continue to closely monitor this file and will consider taking further legal and human rights steps at both international and regional levels should actual risks or proven violations be established.
