Enforced Disappearance of Women Activists Continues in Nyala, Western Sudan
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to forcibly disappear a number of women activists and journalists in Nyala since March 5th, following their arrest for participating in a workshop on women’s rights, peace, and security issues. According to a statement, the activists were taken from their homes to unknown locations, and all contact with them remains severed. Their families and lawyers have been denied access to information about their whereabouts and have no means of communicating with them, raising serious concerns for their safety.
The group warned of the perilous situation in areas where the judicial system is absent, noting the potential for ill-treatment, violence, or denial of care. They called for the immediate disclosure of the women’s places of detention and their unconditional release.
Emergency Lawyers also urged regional and international organizations to take immediate action to pressure for an end to arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances, and to protect human rights defenders.
