Alarm from the Integrated Stage Classification System: Sudan is beyond the threshold of famine and severe malnutrition in two additional areas of Northern Darfur as the crisis exacerbated in Kordofan Date of publication: Thursday, February 5, 2026 — 21 international humanitarian organizations, including the NRC, Blan International, warned Save the Children, KARE (CARE), IRC, in a joint statement entitled (Saver the Sudan) in Umm Barrow and Cernoy, North Darfur, warned that other neighboring areas might face a catastrophic famine similar to the starvation announced by the Integrated Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) in the region of Food Security, declared in the Sudan The alarm showed that the global acute malnutrition rate (GAM) exceeded the weight scale threshold for the height (weight-for-height Z-HZ) of the international acute malnutrition index (GAM) by 52.9% in Umm Barrow (nearly twice the threshold of famine), 34% in Kernoy, among children aged 6 to 59 months, and 18.1% in Umm Barrow, and 7.8% in Kernoy, for the same population This puts them in a phase beyond the threshold of famine (Map 2), to the heavy stage of famine. These disturbing rates indicate an increased risk of high mortality The alarm added that many other conflict-affected or difficult to reach might face similar catastrophic conditions; it was difficult to determine whether there were other areas in the same situation, especially those not covered by assessments or monitoring systems, and between displaced populations With the confirmation of the famine already taken in Kadugli in the analysis of September 2025, extreme conditions were expected in daling and the West Nuba mountains This warning for the Sudan is based on the latest evidence available until January 29, except for the circumstantial developments in Grand Kordofan, which were monitored until February 4, 2026, and highlights the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, following the analysis of the Integrated Integrated Integrated Stage Classification of Food Security (IPCFS) on November 3, 2025, which classified famine (PCFS 5) in El Fasher and Kadugli, and 20 areas in Greater Darfur and Kordovan are at risk of famine Protracted displacement, conflict and the deterioration of health, water and food systems are expected to increase severe malnutrition and food insecurity Acute Malnutrition would continue to deteriorate in 2026, with cases estimated at 4.2 million in 2026, compared to 3.7 million in 2025 It is also expected that the humanitarian situation in the El Fasher Corridor-Tayyard will deteriorate further in the short term unless hostilities are immediately stopped with a broad humanitarian response. As the conflict and displacement to the Tina region and its approaching the border with Chad continue to be extended, instability along this vital corridor, which is crucial for humanitarian assistance and trade supplies from Chad, could lead to a serious deterioration in food, nutrition and health conditions. The population in these areas already faces very critical levels of severe malnutrition, weak diet diversity, and dependence on unsafe water sources. There are already unavoidable deaths that will continue to rise unless urgent action is taken The alarm concluded that the escalation of the conflict in Great Kordofan is likely to increase the number of people facing severe starvation and severe malnutrition, and anticipated a rise in hunger-related deaths (map 3). The population faces hunger, limited access to health care, and serious risks to their safety in isolated or disputed areas. Local authorities and the armed forces continue to maintain strict control over markets, food supplies and population movement, which prevents local communities from benefiting from favourable agricultural conditions The alarm referred to the urgent and necessary need to take immediate action to end hostilities and open safe hallways for displaced persons from conflict. There were ways to prevent further loss of life and stop the spread of famine and human suffering only by supporting assistance, strengthening the capacities of societies to adapt and ensuring a broad-based human response
